You collected your recyclables. You rinsed the bottles, broke down the boxes, sorted the aluminum cans. You dragged the bin to the curb on pickup day. That's genuine effort, genuine intention, and genuine care for where this stuff ends up.

This is where the Silly Goose lives — not in bad intentions, but in a system that quietly fails the people who are trying the hardest. The blue bin looks like the answer. It was designed to look like the answer. But for glass specifically, it isn't.

Here's what actually happens next.

Glass breaks before the truck leaves your street.

Recycling trucks use a hydraulic space compactor built into the back of the truck to squeeze material down and make room for more. It fires constantly throughout the route — sometimes every few stops, sometimes more. It has to. Without it, the truck fills up in minutes and can't complete its circuit.

The problem: glass is in that mix. The moment your bin is dumped into the back of the truck, your wine bottle is now sitting next to your cardboard, your cereal boxes, your plastic jugs, and your aluminum cans. When the blade fires, it doesn't distinguish. It crushes everything together.

Glass shards are now inside your paper, your cardboard, your aluminum cans.

When glass shatters under pressure, the fragments don't stay put. They scatter and drive into whatever is around them — paper fibers, cardboard layers, plastic film. Once a glass shard is embedded in a sheet of cardboard or a folded pizza box, it cannot be removed. The materials are now fused by contamination.

This happens before the truck ever reaches a sorting facility. By the time the load is unloaded, the glass has already done its damage. The paper mills and aluminum smelters that buy recovered materials will reject anything with glass contamination — it damages their equipment and compromises their output.

The sorting facility can't save it. Neither can good intentions.

At the recycling sorting facility, workers and machines attempt to separate materials by type. But glass fragments smaller than roughly a third of an inch fall straight through the sorting screens and mix into a fine debris stream that has no market. There is no buyer for contaminated glass dust.

Larger shards jam conveyor belts, destroy optical sorting cameras, and shred bales of recovered paper. Many facilities charge extra fees — or reject loads outright — when glass contamination is too high. What was meant to be recycled becomes a liability. Your cardboard goes to landfill. Your plastic goes to landfill. And your glass? Buried as daily landfill cover, if it's used at all. Your recycling effort ended at the curb. The rest was wish-cycling.
